Reaching out: to people with learning disabilities and their families from BME communities

The Reaching out to families project set out to find new ways of addressing the inequalities that people with learning disabilities from Black and Minority Ethnic Communities (BME) and their families experience in health and social care.

The project paid particular attention to the role of third sector organisations and usedaction learning techniques to identify good practice.

The report found that local community organisations have a significant role to play in identifying and contacting local families who are supporting a learning disabled person. It also revealed more attention should be given to understanding the dynamics of families within the different BME communities, especially the roles and responsibilities of their members.
